Prepare Your Quilt for Longarm Quilting

A little preparation goes a long way toward creating a beautiful finished quilt. Follow these simple guidelines before shipping or dropping off your quilt so everything is ready for the longarm.

1. Prepare Your Quilt Top

READY

Your quilt top should be complete, clean, and pressed before quilting.

PRESS & CHECK

Press seams as flat as possible and trim any loose threads, especially dark threads that could show through lighter fabrics. Check that seams around the outside edges are secure.

MARK THE TOP

If your quilt has a definite top, simply mark it with a note or safety pin so I know which direction you’d like it quilted.

2. Prepare Your Backing

We believe in creating meaningful experiences that inspire and connect. Let us help you bring your vision to life.

MAKE IT LARGER

Your backing should be at least 4 inches larger than your quilt top on all four sides.

Example: A 60" × 80" quilt top needs backing that measures at least 68" × 88".

PIECED BACKINGS

Pieced backings are welcome. Remove selvages from seams and use a ½" seam allowance. Press the seams open whenever possible.

PRESS & SQUARE

Please press your backing and make sure it is square before sending it.

3. Prepare Your Batting

We believe in creating meaningful experiences that inspire and connect. Let us help you bring your vision to life.

CHOOSE YOUR BATTING

You may provide your own batting, or batting can be added to your quilting order.

ALLOW EXTRA ROOM

If you provide your own batting, it should be at least 4 inches larger than your quilt top on all four sides, just like your backing.

KEEP LAYERS SEPARATE

Please do not baste, pin, or spray-baste your quilt. Your quilt top, batting, and backing need to remain three separate pieces so they can be loaded individually onto the longarm.

4. Before You Send Your Quilt
